MOR[..AN
CIVIL ENGINEERING
P
Jeff K. Mortan, P.E., RE.A_
Robin D. Peters, P.E., R.E.A.
Civil Engineering Water Wastewater Drainage Studies Grading Plans Site Development Soil Testing
PRESSURE DOSED SEPTIC SYSTEM
RECOMMENDED MONITORING AND MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES
GENERAL
Septic systems utilizing pressure dosing technology were developed as a way to utilize on-site
waste water disposal systems on parcels having high ground water and/or shallow/slowly
permeable soils. Pressure dosing utilizes an effluent -rated pump to pressurize small -diameter
perforated distribution laterals within the disposal trenches (leach lines). Combining small orifices
with lateral pressurization ensures even distribution of effluent throughout the length of the
trenches, particularly when compared with conventional gravity -fed systems. Pressure dosing
technology is well -proven and widely accepted, particularly in the foothill areas of California,
Oregon and Washington.
The pressure dosed septic system incorporates a variety of mechanical and electrical components
including a pump, valves, float switches and an alarm. The addition of these components to the
system (compared with a "standard" system, for example) suggests that additional maintenance
.may be required to keep the system in proper working order. Experience shows, in fact, that
repair and/or replacement of the system's mechanical components will likely be necessary as these
components eventually wear or fail.
The following guidelines provide monitoring and maintenance recommendations which should
increase the longevity of the system and aid in its repair should this become necessary. Note,
however, that septic system diagnostics and/or repairs are not for everyone -- if the owner does
• not feel comfortable with or thoroughly understand the system., these tasks are probably best
conducted by a qualified local contractor who is familiar with modern septic systems. Note that
all septic system inspections or repairs should be conducted in such a way that Imman contact
with sewage is prevented,
SEPTIC TANK AND -PUNT TANK/DOSING CHAMBER
The septic tank and pump tank/dosing chamber require periodic pumping to prevent solids from
passing into the remainder of the system, The septic tank should be inspected approximately once
per year by the owner or a professional septic tank pumper and should be pumped of its contents
when the solids (sludge) accumulate to within 12-18 inches of the bottom of the inlet tee. Sludge
accumulation varies widely depending on the domestic habits of the household, but the average
septic tank will generally require pumping about every five to seven years, The pump tankidosing
chamber should be inspected at the same time as the septic tank, however pumping of this unit is
normally not required as often as tite septic tank.
504 Broadway - Jackson, California 95642 • (209) 223-1441 • FAX (209) 223-5044 • mce@cdepot.net
