The primary filter bed, and ultimately the 100%replacement area filter bed will consist of Standard
Infiltrator Chambers® SC (Shallow Cover). Six inch spacers must be used in-between the
chambers. The pressure laterals will hang from the tops of the chambers with the effluent trickling
down over the louvers.
Backfill soil over the chambers must consist of a sandy loam material, with four to six inches of
cover soil material over the chambers. A grass-type plant may be planted over the disposal area so
that the plant roots can evapotranspire effluent from the louvers during favorable times of the year.
Septic Tanks
Influent from Mr. Rios' house will gravity flow into a 1,200 gallon, septic tank Effluent from this
tank will level, or near-level gravity to the 2,000 gallon septic tank An Orenco Biofilter® will be
installed in the be installed in the second compartment. Effluent from the Biofilter will be pumped
to be equally distributed throughout the Infiltrator Chambers filter bed system. This 2,000 tank
will provide preliminary treatment and trap paper, etc. The tank must be pumped on a prescribed
interval basis depending on direct observations of paper and scum accumulation; e.g., every six
months to every three years, depending on sludge/scum accumulation.
Peaking factors for users on septic tanks vary with usage during the hour of the day, and day of the
week. Peak hourly rates are associated with normal working hours. The ratio of the peak day to
the average day can vary from 1.5 to >5, depending upon the usage. However, peaking factors are
not as relevant since the effluent pump will dose on demand. A peaking factor of 2.5 (average
between 0 and 5) will be used in the calculation below:
Septic Tank Hydraulic Detention Time
Detention Time= 1,200+2,000 izal septic tank capacity x 0.70(30%volume lost to sludge/scum accumulation)
2.5 (Peaking Factor)x 400 gals/day ADF
Detention Time=2.2 days. The minimum acceptable detention time is 1.0 days. Therefore, a
1,200 gallon septic tank for the residential use and a 2,00 gallon tank for the winery is adequate.
Primary and 100% Replacement Filter Bed Area
The filter bed area is calculated in the procedure described in Section 8.7 of the San Joaquin
County Sewage Standards and EHD Document 42-01-004: Calculation Requirements for Commercial
Septic Systems: OP-4/1
Base Tank Capacity(BTC) = 1,200 gals /
Lineal Feet of Leachline (LFLL) = 1,200 BTC +400 ADF x 0.225 Soil Factor based on a loam soil at
24 inches below grade where the soil-effluent interface will occur= 360 LFLL
Filter Bed Area= 360 x 3 (Loam Soil Factor)= 1,080 square feet. The primary filter bed area is
proposed to be rectangular in area: 25 ft wide x 43 ft long= 1,075 sq. ft. The manifold is to be at
the northern end.
