The nitrate loading calculations indicate an effluent concentration that is below the MCLfor
drinking water and below the current nitrate concentration in the on-site domestic well water.
This is primarily due to taking the subject property as a whole, which consists of five acres, as the
area contributing to nitrate formation. The wine grapes are not fertilized with nitrogen since this
would promote vegetative growth, and not the reproductive growth of producing grapes.
The septic system that serves Mr. Rios' house is antiquated and could possibly be impacting the
underlying water table. By connecting the residential effluent flow to the new septic system, along
with effluent flow from the proposed winery, the referenced highly favorable surface soil
characteristics can be taken advantage of to mitigate nitrate impact.
It is important to recognize that all septic systems and disposal areas have a lifespan. This lifespan
is unpredictable due to the numerous operational and environmental factors involved. Operational
factors include checking the toilet regularly to ensure there is no leakage. Environmental factors
include biomat buildup that will occur at the soil/effluent interface within the chambers and a
naturally occurring process. Biomat buildup is typically managed by allowing the filter bed to rest
and rehabilitate naturally.
It is imperative that no chemicals used in the wine-making process, other than low concentrations of
household cleaners be introduced into the septic system.
The grass ground cover over the disposal areas will need irrigation during the spring and summer
months. However, care must be given to the amount of water applied so as to not inundate the
system. It is recommended to irrigate with"impact-type" sprinkler heads during the night. If
irrigation is needed during the hottest summer days, the irrigation system should activate several
times for short durations. Nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied to the fl1ter bed rassrQ ound
cover area.
Page-9-
Chesney Consulting
