0
IRAN&METAL
BATTERY HANDLING SAFETY POLICY (CFR 1926.441)
Batteries are used to power automobiles, trucks, tractors, and construction or power
equipment. While there are several different types of batteries, most batteries contain
sulfuric acid and lead. Because batteries contain chemicals, they can pose a hazard to
workers if handled improperly. To ensure the safety of its employees and customers,
Alco will strictly enforce the handling of batteries as well as the use of PPE.
• To avoid splashing acid in your face, always wear the proper personal protective
equipment. These include but are not limited to: ANSI approved safety glasses,
gloves, and boots. Never tuck your pant legs into your boots because
spilled acid can form a pool in your boots.
• Never lean a battery on its side when handling them. The sulfuric acid in
batteries is highly corrosive and can cause skin irritation, eye damage, or
respiratory irritation. If acid splashes on your skin or eyes, immediately flood the
area with cool running water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention
immediately.
• Always practiced good hygiene and wash your hands after handling a battery
and before eating.
• Never smoke or work with an open flame around batteries. Because batteries
use hydrogen and oxygen, they can be explosive at high levels.
• Store batteries in well ventilated areas away from all ignition sources and
incompatible materials.
• All batteries MUST be kept off the ground and away from sources of water. Alco
primarily uses wooden pallets to package and transport batteries.
• Proper battery packaging consists of putting batteries on a pallet, followed by a
piece of cardboard. Battery packaging allows for a maximum of 3 layers and the
entire package must be secured in plastic wrap.
have read and fully understand Alco's policy on Battery Handling. I will adhere to it at all times. I
understand that by not complying with Alco's policy, I am subject to disciplinary action.
NAME (PRINT) SIGNATURE DATE
TRAINER'S NAME SIGNATURE DATE
