Biological Analysis
It is impossible to control the aeration tank by visual observation alone. There is a biological
process associated with the conversion process in the aeration tank that will require a different
method for monitoring the process.
The dissolved and suspended pollutants enter the aeration tank in the form of carbon, quantified
as CBOD, and in the form of nitrogen as ammonia. These pollutants serve as a "food" source for
the aerobic bacteria in the aeration tank. The bacteria "eat"the pollutants and then convert them
into more bacteria.
Preliminary Effluent Aeration Tank Effluent Clarifier Effluent
Photograph curtesy of Class A training Manual Ohio
Pollutant Conversion Process
There are several tests that should be performed routinely to determine the health of the
biomass in the tank. Refer to the Standard Operating Proceedures for addtional information.
• Dissolved Oxygen Testing: Dissolved Oxygen (DO) testing measures how much oxygen is
available to the bacteria in the tank.
o Tests are taken each weekday at 7 set locations which are marked on the handrails
of the cat walk.
o Operator should hold the probe about 2 feet (1 arms length) out from the rail and
about 2 feet under the surface.
