Protozoa: Free Swimming Ciliates <br />They appear as flagellates begin to <br />disappear. Large numbers indicate <br />abundance of active bacteria, early in the <br />treatment process, nutrients have not <br />been depleted <br />Metazoa: Rotifer <br />Rotifiers should never dominate in the <br />system, they have little to do with the <br />removal of organic material, their main <br />contribution is to clarify the effluent. <br />Protozoa: Stalked Ciliates <br />Large numbers indicate most of the organic <br />material is gone & as sludge ages the <br />dominance of stalked ciliate changes from <br />single stalks to colonial species. The greater <br />the number of heads, the older the sludge <br />i <br />F I <br />f <br />Metazoa: Nematode <br />Nematodes have little to do with the <br />removal of organic material, their main <br />contribution is to clarify the effluent. Some <br />species have teeth and a spear that they <br />can stick into prey. <br />
