Konig
Subject: SUMMARY OF BACKFILLING OPERATIONS
LABORATORY TESTING
FORWARD, INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
Gentlemen:
This letter is to summarize the backfilling operations of
four test holes at Forward, Inc. , in San Joaquin County, Calif-
ornia. Our work was performed based on your written authori-
tion on September 28 , 1982.
On October 4 , 1982, a representative of our firm backfilled
the west hole of the north pond with 3/8-inch pea gravel and
a slurry mixture of approximately 85 percent bentonite and 15
percent cement. The slurry was of moderate consistency and* *
-
did not appear to percolate sufficiently through the pea gravel.
At the suggestion of Mr. Eagle, we left the site and obtained
3/4-inch concrete aggregate. Upon returning to the site, the
remaining three holes were backfilled to approximately 3-1/2
to 4 feet below existing ground surface. The 3/4-inch aggre-
gate allowed 4 to 5 gallons of relatively thick slurry mixture
to percolate and fill the holes.
On October 8 , 1982, the three holes containing the 3/4-inch
aggregate were backfilled to the surface using clay soils ob-
tained adjacent to the site. These holes were backfilled
according to specifications outlined in your letter of September 28,
1982 . The remaining hole containing a bentonite plug above the
pea gravel was drilled out to approximately 6 feet below ground
surface. Clean pea gravel was not encountered; therefore, it
appeared that the bentonite slurry had partially mixed with the
pea gravel. Additional slurry was poured into the hole until
evidence of percolation ceased. This hole was then backfilled
to the surface with the clay soils .
EK
