KLEINFELDER
2 BACKGROUND
Forward Landfill is located approximately seven miles southeast of Stockton as shown on
Plate 2-1. The site covers 157 acres and waste management activities have occurred only
within approximately 60 acres of the site. Waste disposal activities at the site have been
limited to mainly nonhazardous solid waste, inert waste, and certain designated wastes
(ash, petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil). WMU A covers eight acres and was
filled with mostly designated and some hazardous waste. This WMU has been classified as
a Class I unit for the purpose of closure and post-closure.
On January 2, 1990, DHS issued a Hazardous Waste Facility Post-Closure Permit for
Forward Landfill. Provision VIIIA of the post-closure permit requires Forward Landfill to
prepare an RFI Workplan addressing the issue of apparent contamination in MW-5A. The
location of MW-5A is shown on Plate 2-2. Low levels of metals and volatile organics have
been detected in this well.
Contamination like that detected in MW-5A has not been found in any other facility
monitoring wells to date. It appears that the source of contamination is in the immediate
vicinity of MW-5A. Three possible sources of contamination exist: WMU B, a closed
nonhazardous waste landfill; WMU D 87, an area that historically contained a series of
solar evaporation ponds; and the South Fork of South Littlejohn Creek.
C7-90-99 3
