■
depth to static ground water is measured from a set location at the top of the PVC casing.
The depth of water is then subtracted from the elevation of the top of the well casing to
provide a ground water elevation for each monitoring well location.
A-3.6 Surface Water Sampling
Surface water samples are obtained by dipping clean laboratory prepared bottles gently
into the water body. Samples containers are filled so that no air bubbles are present. Care
should be taken not to disturb bottom sediment or otherwise introduce foreign material
into the sample. After collection samples are labelled and handled as in other types of
sampling. Frequently field parameters such as pH, temperature, and conductivity are
measured at the time of sampling.
A-3.7 Surface Soil/Sediment Sampling
Surface soil or sediment samples may be collected by diving samplers containing sample
tubes, driving sample tubes, or collecting grab samples which are placed into laboratory
prepared sample jars. An effort is made to pack the containers as full as possible to reduce
air space. A fresh surface is exposed by scraping with a knife or shovel prior to sampling.
Sampled material is described, and may be screened in the field. Collected soil/sediment
samples are sealed, labelled and handled as previously described.
FWR-92-04 Page A-4
Copyright 1992 Kleinfelder, Inc.
