0
IRON&METAL STORM WATER AWARENESS
The purpose of this policy is to educate employees on the importance of
maintaining clean water. By making sure that our water is clean, we are
able to maintain compliance with the law and keep our environment clean.
Alco has created Storm Water pollution Protection Program to help guide its
employees in this process.
The first step in keeping a clean environment is to identify pollutants and
their sources. Examples of pollutants are: oils & lubricants, vehicle
antifreeze, battery acid, and metals. These pollutants can come from the
following: original sources, forklifts, trucks, trailers, personal vehicles,
machinery, scrap metal turnings, new metals, bailed materials, garbage, or
debris from the ground.
There are three steps that we can use when it comes to maintain clean
storm water:
1. Prevention- Keep materials, both new and old covered as much as
possible. Keep equipment clean, vehicles in good working order and
free of leaks. Keep containers closed at all times.
Z. Clean up — Use power equipment to sweep large areas and brooms to
sweep up small areas. Use absorbent to clean up soils and other
liquids. After containing spills report it to your supervisor immediately.
3. Filtration - Covered drain inlets are located throughout the facility to
transport storm water away from the yard. Covers are in place to
ensure heavy metals and debris do not enter the storm systems.
Make sure our drains are covered at all times. Immediately report
uncovered drains to your supervisor. In addition, vehicle washing may
only occur at Alco's designated "truck wash" areas.
