All studs are burned out, only stucco and wire
are left. Rafters are about 10 - 25% of strength due to
charring and many are entirely missing. One wall has
caved inwards at shoulder height during the last few
days. Only the remaining rafters prevent collapse of the
walls inward. This is significant because substantial
volumes of liquids in fragile, damaged or leaky
containers would be spilled if the walls fall inward.
The concrete slab is badly cracked and underlain by at
least a foot of gravel which will be no barrier to deep
penetration of subsoil and therefore no barrier to very
large bills for contaminated soil removal.
The unburned area is loaded with hundreds of gallons of
chemicals, mostly acids. The building cannot be secured
(no roof, half-collapsed wall, most doors nailed plywood)
and there has been at least one burglary. Vandalism and
spillage, or injury to trespassers are very possible.
This area has little contamination, but the scope exists
for a problem as bad as the burned area subsoil if arson
or vandalism occurs.
On the basis of our experience, we believe that none of
the material in the storage area is remarketable or
donatable and all will have to be disposed of as hazardous
waste.
