Passive Soil Gas and Subslab Installation and Retrieval
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
Equipment List
1. Appropriate PPE r
2. Beacon PSG sampling kit
a. Hammer drill (recommendation available from Beacon)
4. Augur or Drill bits 1"-to 1%2"-diameter and 1/2"to 1" diameter drill bit. Lengths of drill
bits vary by target depth (1 to 15 feet). For depths greater than 36 inches, 1.5 or 2 inch
auger may be preferred.
5. Quick patch ready set cement, tray, trowel and water.
Soil Gas Investigation Design, Spacing and Objectives
Sample spacing: The selection of sampling points is strongly dependent upon the need for high
resolution coverage and budget. General grid patterns with 50 to 100 feet centers are typical for
reconnaissance work, while closer spaced, source area investigations and high-resolution
sampling are accomplished 15 to 30 feet spacing (depending on site conditions).
Collection depth: Passive soil gas applications are placed at shallow depths when sub-slab
sampling is done (less than 12 inches), shallow depths of 12-36 inches when investigating sites
and deeper depths of 5 feet bgs or more when adhering to regulatory guidance or based on site
investigation objectives. The following installation procedures are provided for different depth
applications/objectives.
A two-person team can install approximately 5 0-100 samplers per day depending on surface
cover, depth of drilling, and sample spacing. For retrieval, one person can retrieve approximately
50 samplers per day and patch holes for temporary sample locations. More if permanent soil
vapor wells are utilized.
