September 18, 1991
TO: Laboratory Staff
FROM: Dennis V. Ferrero, M.P.A. , Director
Public Health Laboratory
RE: Infectious Waste Discards
1. To preserve the longevity of the autoclaves, reduce potential
hazards and save Laboratory Assistant time, the -laboratory
will discard most of the "infectious waste discards" directly
into Biohazardous Waste Boxes. Gloves are worn when handling
these contaminated discard bags and items. These boxes and
plastic liners are provided by and picked up by Integrated
Environmental Systems (IES) .
2. The autoclave will be cleaned and maintained as in the 'past,
but most the runs will be media preparation and reagent or`dry
sterilization runs.
3 . All "infectious waste discards" will be discarded into an IES
Biohazardous Waste Box except:
a. Mycology section discards
b. Mycobacteriology discards I
Items from these 2 areas of the laboratory will continue to be
autoclaved (20 psi, 70 minutes) within 2.4 hours of discard,
before discarding into waste receptacle.)
4 . Procedure for use of Biohazardous Waste Box: (Media Room
Laboratory Assistant)
a. Assemble Biohazardous Waste Box provided by IES. Line
with large red plastic bag. Keep one box in the
laboratory for ongoing discards.
b. Wear gloves when placing discards into boxes and into
autoclaves. Use caution when filling the box.
