_ r
October 4, 1991
TO: Laboratory Staff
FROM: Holly Meyers, Supervising Public Health Microbiologist
RE: Infectious Waste: Addendum to "Infectious Waste Memo-
9/18/91".
A. West Laboratory:
1. Place infectious waste discards on carts located
throughout laboratory.
2. The media room laboratory assistant will empty the carts
by 4:30 P.M., and as needed throughout the day.
3 . Items on Mycobacteriology (Tb) and Mycology discard carts
are transferred (wearing gloves) to the shelves in auto-
clave room marked "contaminated".
4. Items on all other infectious waste discard carts are
transferred (wearing gloves) directly into the Bio-
hazardous Waste Box for discard; or, to the contaminated
shelves in the autoclave room if they are to be
autoclaved and saved.
Note: Items should not go on to the shelves and then
into the box.
5. At the end of each day, the media room laboratory
assistant should check the counters and remove full
discard bags "oor boxes and replace them with empty ones.
Again, these full items are transferred to the back of
the laboratory on the cart.
B. East Laboratory:•
1. A Biohazardous Waste Box is now located in the East
Laboratory.
2 . Only "autoclave and save" discards will be brought back
to the West Laboratory for autoclaving. All other
infectious waste generated in the East Laboratory will be
discarded directly into the Biohazardous Waste Box
located there.
3 . The serology laboratory assistant will close, tape and
transport this box to Biohazardous Waste Bin when it
if full. (Use hand truck) .
C. Note: Use hand truck to move a full box to Biohazardous
Waste Bin. Use building exits with ramps and sidewalks
not stairs to transport the waste boxes to the bin.
