PR450112
San Joaquin County permit no. 4530
Environmental Health Division
304 E. Weber Ave
Stockton, CA 95202
Dear Ms . Foley:
This letter is in response to the Hazardous Waste Inspection performed at Delta Blood
Bank on November 10, 1997. Please note the following responses to the cited code
violations:
• Biohazardous waste containers lacked proper labeling in violation of Health
and Safety Code Section 118280 (b).
Response: All biohazardous waste containers were labeled with the proper
biohazardous waste labels on the lid and sides within one week of the inspection as
directed.
• One biohazardous waste container in the lab did not have a closed, tight
fitting cover in violation of Health and Safety Code Section 118280 (b).
Response: The lid was closed during the inspection. The Technical Director has
informed the laboratory staff to be aware that all biohazardous containers must be
closed when not in use.
• Medical Waste Tracking document showed that more than twenty pounds per
week of medical waste was being transported with a Limited Quality Hauling
Exemption. This is in violation of Health and Safety Code Section 118030(a)(1).
Response: The current Registered Waste Hauler, BFI, employed by the blood
center has been contracted to provide pickup service at the North Stockton Facility.
Thank you for your patience while waiting to obtain the hauling documents. And thank
you also for the contact person at the State Department of Health Services. Elisa Garin
was able to give us "tips" on ways to reduce our hazardous waste. Any questions or
additional information, please contact me at (209) 943-3830 or by FAX at (209) 462-
0221.
Sincerely,
Be dam n S * er, MD
Responsible Head
A Non-Profit Organization Serving Alpine,Calaveras,San Joaquin,Stanislaus,Tuolumne Counties
