Spills can occur on environmental surfaces (such as floors or walls) or
work surfaces (such as bench tops or cart tops), on or in equipment,
on carpeting, and on reusable blood containers (such as bins, pails or
coolers). Cleaning and disinfection should occur as soon as feasible
after discovering surfaces are visibly contaminated.
a. Blot the spill with an absorbent material such as a paper towel
b. Dispose of absorbent material as biohazard waste (according to
State definitions)
c. Use an acceptable disinfectant to decontaminate the surface.
d. It is
required to use carpet protectors (such as thin plastic on rolls
with slight adhesive on side) to create a nonporous surface
(reference System 15)
1. Staff members are responsible to ensure the
application of the carpet protector does NOT
create a trip hazard.
