LODI MEMORIAL HOSOL ffective: 7/16/85 <br />INFECTION CONTROL <br />SHARPSGARD 2000 TM <br />DISPOSABLE NEEDLE/SYRINGE & SHARPS MODULE <br />DEFINITION: Sharpsgard 2000 TM Module is a needle/syringe & sharps disposable <br />system that is puncture proof, tamper proof, leak proof and is <br />at the "point of use". <br />PURPOSE: To prevent a Health Hazard and injury to the Health Care employee <br />by disposing needles and sharps at the "point of use". <br />To be used by Nursing personnel, laboratory technicians, respiratory <br />therapy. <br />EQUIPMENT: Sharpsgard 2000 TM Module, located in each patient's room, medication <br />carts, utility room and medication room, on 2W, 2C, 3rd, ICU and ER. <br />OB on med cart, Labor Rooms, Birthing Room. <br />PROCEDURE: <br />I. Nursing <br />A. The <br />Nurse giving IV or IM injection or starting or discontinuing <br />IV's, <br />will discard the needle/syringe in the Sharpsgard 2000 TM <br />Disposable <br />Module. <br />AMEN <br />1. <br />Do not recap needle. <br />2. <br />Do not break or cut needle from hub of syringe. <br />3. <br />If needle and syringe are too long to drop in module remove <br />needle from hub with hubremover located on top left side of <br />module. <br />4. <br />To remove needle from IV tubing use hub remover on top <br />left side of module. <br />5. <br />Use Sharpsgard Module in medication room when mixing IV or <br />IM medication. <br />6. <br />Use Sharpsgard Module in utility room when need arises, i.e., <br />sharps left on treatment tray. <br />B. Lab <br />and Respiratory Therapy <br />1. <br />Dispose of Needle/syringes before leaving room by following <br />same procedure an nursing. <br />C. Housekeeping <br />1. <br />Will be responsible emptying and cleaning Modules. <br />2. <br />Will check Modules daily while cleaning rooms. <br />3. <br />Will remove full Modules from wall with lock -safe keyplate <br />and take Mcdule to collection cart. <br />a. Will change when patient is discharged from "Isolation". <br />
