Infection Control—Environmental fection Control <br /> Medical Waste Storage <br /> Highlights Policy Statement <br /> Medical waste stored for treatment,disposal,or pickup shall be protected in accordance with <br /> established policies and procedures. <br /> Policy Interpretation and Implementation <br /> Labeling of Containers 1. Containers of untreated medical waste that are not otherwise labeled will be <br /> labeled with a "biohazard" or "infectious medical waste" water resistant label <br /> affixed to the outside of the container whenever such a container is identified. <br /> Warning Labels 2. Warning labels must be large enough to ensure that they are clearly visible and <br /> readable from a distance of at least five(5)feet. <br /> Storage Locations 3. Containers of medical waste will be stored in the following location(s): <br /> Note:Containers must be protected from the wind,rain,and water. <br /> Refrigeration of Medical 4. Medical waste that is likely to decay or rot before being treated, disposed of, or <br /> Wastes picked up, will be refrigerated or in an area or manner that keeps the waste from <br /> decaying or rotting until it has been properly disposed of. Medical wastes meeting <br /> this criteria will be maintained at the following location(s): <br /> Protection of Medical 5. Medical wastes must be stored so that it is protected from animals and does not <br /> Wastes provide a breeding place or a food source for insects and rodents. <br /> Outside Storage 6. Containers or buildings that are used to store medical wastes and sharps outdoors <br /> (e.g., dumpsters, sheds, etc.), will be locked at all times to prevent unauthorized <br /> access. <br /> Access to Medical Wastes 7. Access to medical wastes storage areas are limited to the following personnel: <br /> Reporting Violations 8. Anyone who discovers violations of these policies must report such incidents to the <br /> Infection Control Coordinator(or designee)immediately or as soon as practical. <br /> Storage Limitations 9.
