0 0 <br /> Medical Waste Handling <br /> Highlights Policy Statement <br /> Medical waste will be handled and disposed of safely and in accordance with regulatory <br /> requirements. <br /> Policy Interpretation and Implementation <br /> Items Constituting Medical 1. For the purpose of this policy, medical waste includes human blood and blood- <br /> Waste soiled articles, contaminated items(i.e., soiled dressings), items contaminated with <br /> feces from a person diagnosed as having a disease that is transmitted through feces, <br /> and disposable sharps(e.g.,needles/scalpels). <br /> Sharps 2. All sharps must be handled as medical waste,placed in approved sharps containers, <br /> and sent for eventual incineration. <br /> Blood/Excretions/ 3. Liquid blood,excretions,and secretions shall be flushed into the sewer system. <br /> Secretions <br /> Contaminated Disposable 4. Disposable items, which are contaminated with excretions or secretions from <br /> Items residents believed to be infectious, must be placed in plastic bags and sealed, and <br /> either decontaminated with bleach (500 ppm, 0.5 ml per 1000 ml water), <br /> incinerated,or stored in appropriate container until removal from the premises. <br /> Disposable Items Soiled 5. Disposable items soiled with visible blood(or feces from a resident with a disease <br /> with Visible Blood transmitted through feces) must be placed in plastic bags or containers, and a <br /> solution of one (1)part bleach and nine (9)parts water added to saturate the items <br /> or the items must be incinerated.Items can also be placed in appropriate containers <br /> and placed in medical waste. <br /> Weighing Medical Wastes 6. Medical wastes will be weighed at the time of collection and/or storage prior to disposal. <br /> Recording Weight of <br /> Wastes 7. Primary transporter is responsible for weighing medical wastes. <br /> 8. The weight, in pounds, will be recorded on the medical waste tracking form <br /> (manifest)and/or the shipment log maintained by this facility. <br /> Compactor/Dumpster 9. Any compactor/dumpster must be locked from the outside when not in use and at <br /> night. <br /> Authorized Vendors 10.
