Plant Ops & <br />Sutter Gould Medical Foundation EVS <br />Policy Area: Facility B Property Services <br />References: <br />Applicability: Sutter Gould Medical <br />Foundation <br />Waste Policy <br />PURPOSE <br />The purpose of VMF Waste Management Program is to describe procedures for the identification, <br />storage, handling and disposal of sharps, regulated medical waste, hazardous drugs (HD), <br />pharmaceutical and hazardous waste generated at VMF facilities. <br />POLICY <br />It is the policy of the Valley Medical Foundation (VMF) to ensure waste is appropriately disposed in <br />compliance with the Medical Waste Management Act (MWMA) of 2017, Resource Conservation and <br />Recovery Act (RCRA) and in accordance with all federal, state and local government regulations. It will <br />also ensure that there is minimal risk to our patients, staff, community and the environment. <br />SCOPE <br />This policy applies to the Valley Medical Foundation, Sutter Health Medical Foundation, Sutter Medical <br />Foundation, Sutter Medical Group, Sutter North Medical Group <br />DEFINITIONS <br />A. Medical Waste: <br />1. Any biohazardous, pharmaceutical, or trace antineoplastic (chemotherapy) waste used in a <br />healthcare setting. <br />2. Waste generated in testing of microbiological specimens. <br />3. Sharps and laboratory waste that poses a potential risk of infection to humans. <br />4. Waste generated in the cleanup of trauma scenes. <br />S. Medical Waste Management Plan (MWMP): <br />1. A Medical Waste Management Plan has been developed to protect personnel by eliminating or <br />minimizing their exposure to untreated medical waste. Any potential exposures to untreated medical, <br />biohazardous, sharps or hazardous waste must be reported immediately.
