Dir, Qualltyf <br />Sutter Gould Medical Foundation Care MgmVRisk Mg <br />Policy Area: Patient Care <br />References: <br />Applicability: Sutter Gould Medical <br />Foundation <br />Pharmaceuti Waste <br />Purpose: <br />The purpose of this policy is to insure that Pharmaceutical waste is disposed of in accordance with all federal, <br />state, and local regGlations and to minimize risk to patients, staff, community, and the environment from <br />improper disposal. <br />Responsibility: <br />All members of the patient care team, including physicians, back office staff, environmental services, and any <br />other member who may handle pharmaceutical products. <br />Definitions: <br />1. Medical Waste: sharps waste, biohazardous waste, pathology waste, pharmaceutical waste, and <br />chemotherapeutic waste as defined by the California Medical Waste Management Act (MWMA) and <br />regulated by the California Health and Safety Code. <br />2. hazardous/Medical Waste: any 'red bag" waste as regulated by CHSC 117635. <br />3. Chemotherapeutic Waste: any quantity, including trace amounts, of an agent used for the purpose of <br />killing or preventing the reproduction of malignant cells. <br />4. Pharmaceutical: a prescription or over-the-counter human drug <br />5. Pharmaceutical Waste: a subcategory of medical waste, pharmaceutical waste comprises any leftover <br />or partially used pharmaceutical that cannot be dispensed, repackaged and sold, redistributed, or <br />returned for credit and that is hazardous only because it is a pharmaceutical. Also include in this category <br />are outdated medications and outdated samples. <br />6. Trace Amount: material or waste remaining in a container which cannot be removed by pouring, draining <br />squeezing, or scraping. <br />Materials Needed <br />Pharmaceutical waste containers and accessories supplied are 2, 4, and 8 gallon pharmaceutical collectors, <br />with and without safety trays, associated locking wall/cart brackets, and carts required to secure containers at <br />the drug waste disposal storage location. <br />Phannaceutical Waste.
