0 0 <br />Well Abandonment <br />Abandoned wells need to be sealed carefully to prevent pollution of the <br />greunowater source and prevent poor -quality water of one saw ifer frog <br />anterin9 another• The following are recommendations by the AWWA which <br />will be followed in abandoning groundwater monitoring wells. Specific <br />well abandonment procedures will be submitted to the Department of aealtn <br />Services for approval before each well is abandoned. <br />Sec. 13.1 General <br />Aoenboned test holes, including test wells, uncompleted wells, and <br />completed welts shall be sealed. <br />Meed for Seating of Wells: <br />1. The guiding principle to be <br />followed by the contractor in the sealing of abandoned wells is the <br />restoration, as far as feasible of the controlling— geological conditions <br />that existed before the well was drilled or constructed. <br />Sec. 13.2 Sealing Requirements. <br />A well snail be measured for depth before it is seared to ensure freedom <br />from oostructions that may interfere with effective seating operations. <br />1.3.2. It Liner -pipe removal. Concrete, cement gro::4, or neat <br />cement shalt be used as primary sealing materials and shall be placed from <br />:*.e vc••om upward by ne:1. :hat will avoid segregation or dilution of <br />material. - - - <br />Sec. 13.3 Records of Abandonment Procedures <br />zorple:e accurate recores shall be kept of the entire abandonment <br />procedure to provide detailed records for possible future reference and to <br />demonstrate to the governing state or local agency that the hole was <br />property sealed. <br />'3.3.1 Depths sealed. The depth of each layer of all sealing and <br />backfilling materials shall be recorded. <br />,3.3.2 ouantity of seating material used. The quantity of sealing <br />materials used shall be recorded. Measurements of static water levels and <br />depths shall be recorded. <br />13.3.3 Changes recorded.
