DRILLING AND INSTALLATION METHODS USED FOR LYSIMETER BOREHOLES
The drilling of the lysimeter boreholes is scheduled to begin November 28 and is expected
to take several days depending on the number of lysimeters to be installed. The auger
cuttings will be geologically logged and, at the point where the hole is within approximately
20 feet of the final position, the holes will be continuously cored and the cores examined
to determine if the sidewall or bottom liner has been punctured. When the final depth is
reached, the lysimeters will be installed in approximately 1.5 feet of silica powder and
capped with 2 feet of bentonite. The remaining hole will be grouted with 3% bentonite
cement in the annular space between the 2" PVC casing and the borehole wall. A locking
box will be placed over the lysimeter tubing at the surface.
REMEDIATION PLAN IF HAZARDOUS WASTE IS ENCOUNTERED
If the drilling of the lysimeter boreholes results in the puncturing of the clay liner and the
unearthing of hazardous waste, all personnel in the immediate vicinity will put on
respirators and rubber gloves provided by the drilling company. The borehole will be
cleaned for several minutes by rotating the auger, any excavated hazardous waste will be
placed down the borehole and 10 feet of bentonite pellets will be placed in the borehole,
packed, and hydrated. The remaining open hole will be filled with 3% bentonite cement
grout. All equipment will then be steam cleaned and decontaminated.
