N
k JW Enterprises
50 Schooner Hill
Oakland, CA 94618
(415)841-4905
February 26, 1989
Mr. Dan Maglionico, P.E.
Eljumaily and Butler Associates
P.G. Box 593
Grangevale, CA 95662
Subject: Asbestos Air Sampling at Forward Inc. Landfill, Stockton
Dear Mr. Maglioni co:
This letter reports on the airborne asbestos sampling conducted
by JW Enterprises and EljumailY and Butler at the Forward Inc.
landfill, Stockton, California, on the two occasions of November
29, 1988 and Jan,Uary 26, 1989. At each of those tines, eight
ambient air samples were collected at four locations in close
proximity to the active face of the asbestos disposal area of the
landfill. Sampling was performed using four Mine Safety --
Appliance medium -volume pumps calibrated to two liters per minute
sampling rate. The pumps were calibrated to the two -liter
sampling rate with a filter in place using a precision, rotameter.
The sampling media were 25 millimeter mixed ester membrane
millipore filters, with 0.8 to 1.2 micron pore size. These were
contained in special cartridges, with filter supports, and
connected to the pumps by tygon tubing and plastic adapters.
Each pump was operated for two hours each -for two ccrasecutive
sampling periods. Two samples were collected at each locution on
each sampling date. The sampler locations were to the north,
west, south, and east of the working face, with all samplers
being located within 100 feet of the asbestos disposal area 011
each sampling occasion. The surface winds were light to moderate
northwesterly on both sampling days.
Samples were submitted to the TMA Norcal Laboratory located in
Richmond, California. TMA is an accredited laboratory for
asbestos testing. Samples were analyzed by NIOSH method 7400,
Phase Contrast Microscopy. The asbestos fiber counts for all
samples for both sampling events were reported as less than 2800
fibers per filter. Laboratory results reporting less than 2800
fibers per filter essentially represent no asbestos detected.
