Landmarc Environmental Systems,LLC Site-Specific Health&Safety Plan(SSHSP)
SLIP / TRIP / FALL HAZARDS WITH DRILL RIGS
Although it can be hazardous, environmental drilling can be performed safely with proper pre-
fieldwork planning and safe work procedures while in the field. This safety briefing will focus
specifically on one of the most common hazards when working with a drill rig—slips, trips and falls.
A. When Working with the Drill Rig:
a) Keep general work area free of excess material and debris.
b) Remove all trip hazards by keeping materials organized and out of walkways.
c) Try to keep all works surfaces as clean and dry as possible. Work areas, platforms,
walkways and other access ways should be kept free of debris, grease, ice and mud.
d) Wear appropriate footwear if you know you will be working on wet or slick surfaces.
e) Always remain aware of your footing. Do not run as this will increase your chances of
slipping.
f) Avoid climbing on to any part of the drill rig as it will create a fall hazard.
g) Safe access onto and off of the drill rig (such as a ladder) is required. Jumping off or
climbing up are unacceptable forms of access/egress.
h) No method of access is acceptable while the drill is in operation.
i) When working at elevated heights, it is required that you wear a fall restraining device
attached in a manner to restrict any fall to less than six feet.
j) Make sure that all unattended boreholes are adequately covered or otherwise protected to
prevent drill rig personnel, site visitors or animals from stepping or falling into the hole.
All open boreholes should be covered, protected or backfilled.
B. When Making Repairs:
a) Drillers should not climb the mast to make repairs if the mast can be lowered. If the mast
cannot be lowered to make repairs, workers may use a ladder or climb the mast if proper
fall protection(such as a harness and attached lanyard) is available. Fall protection
devices need to be used anywhere workers are exposed to a fall of 6 feet or higher(if a
ladder or personal lift is not available).
b) Do not climb the mast to make repairs while the drilling rig is operating.
22
