4 Environmental Analysis
4.4 Biological Resources
the potential to provide nesting habitat. The open grassland within the Project site provides
potential foraging habitat for white-tailed kites.
Other Special-status Birds
During the surveys, two loggerhead shrikes, one ferruginous hawk, and one California horned
lark were observed. Loggerhead shrikes and California horned lark were identified in the southern
portion of the Project site in San Joaquin County, and the ferruginous hawk was observed soaring
overhead. Loggerhead shrike is a CDFW Species of Special Concern, and the ferruginous hawk
and California horned lark are CDFW Watch List species. The ferruginous hawk does not nest in
the San Joaquin Valley, but it may hunt on-site; the loggerhead shrike may nest in the trees and
shrubs within the residential areas of the Project site; and California horned larks may nest in
grassland areas of the Project site. Although northern harrier, a CDFW Species of Special
Concern, was not observed during surveys, it may also use the Project site as foraging habitat
and the adjacent areas as nesting habitat.
Griffith Energy Storage Project 4.4-13 Tetra Tech/SCH 2022120675
Draft Environmental Impact Report August 2023
