Visual Impact Assessment Griffith Energy Storage Project
7. The cultural modifications component of the visual quality rating criteria takes into account
any humanmade modifications to the landform,water,vegetation,and/or the addition of
humanmade structures. Depending on their character, these cultural modifications may
detract from the scenery in the form of a negative intrusion,or they may complement and
improve the scenic quality of a view.
Based on the criteria above, views are rated numerically and a total score of visual quality can be
tabulated.Table 1 summarizes the point associated with the various criteria. Based on this rating
system, there are a total of 32 points possible.Views that score a total of 19 points or more are
typically considered very high in visual quality(Class 1).Views that score a total of 12 to 19 points
typically are considered to have a high to above average level of visual quality(Classes II and III).
Finally, views that score a total of 11 points or less typically are considered to have average or lower
visual quality(Class IV).Table 2 summarizes the point associated with the various criteria.Table 2
summarizes the point associated with the various criteria.
Using the criteria below, the visual quality of the existing visual conditions and the post-Project
("simulated"condition)visual conditions will be rated. The scores will determine the Project site's
existing visual class and evaluate whether the Project will result in a lower visual class and the degree
of change between the existing and post-Project visual conditions.
Table 1.Visual Quality Rating System—Scenic Quality Inventory and Evaluation Chart
Rating Criteria and Score
High vertical relief as expressed in Steep canyons, mesas, buttes,
prominent cliffs,spires,or massive rock cinder cones,and drumlins;or
outcrops,or severe surface variation or interesting erosional patterns or Low rolling hills, foothills,or flat
highly eroded formations(including variety in size and shape of valley bottoms;or few or no
Landform major badlands or dune systems);or landforms;or detail features which interesting landscape features.
detail features dominant and are interesting though not dominant Score 1
exceptionally striking and intriguing,
such as glaciers. or exceptional.
SScore 3
Score 5
A variety of vegetative types as Some variety of vegetation, but only Little or no variety or contrast in
Vegetation expressed in interesting forms, textures, one or two major types vegetation.
and patterns.
Score 3 Score 1
Score 5
Clear and clean appearing, still,or Flowing or still, but not dominant in Absent or present, but not
Water cascading white water, any of which are the landscape. noticeable.
a dominant factor in the landscape.
Score 3 Score 0
Score 5
Rich color combinations, variety,or vivid Some intensity or variety in colors
color;or pleasing contrasts in the soil, and contrast of the soil, rock, and Subtle color variations, contrast,
Color rock, vegetation, water,or snow fields. vegetation, but not a dominant or interest;generally mute tones.
scenic element.
