APPENDIX G
DIOXIN AND FURAN ANALYSIS
Former SAN JOAQUIN COGENERATION
17200 Murphy Parkway, Lathrop, San Joaquin County, California

The toxicity of dioxins, furans, and PCBs in terms of the most toxic form of dioxin, 2,3,7,8-
Tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD), is expressed as the Toxic Equivalency Factor
(TEF). The TEF of each individual dioxin/furan or congeners will vary by orders of
magnitude. The TEF for 2,3,7,8-TCDD is 1.0 and the TEF for Octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin
(OCDD) is 0.0003 (World Health Organization 2005 TEF-Appendix E). The final reporting
value for each sample analyzed for dioxin and furans is the Toxic Equivalency or TEQ.
The TEQ represents the sum of the TEF for each congener detected. Some of the
congeners do not even contribute to the TEQ, and some such as OCDD contribute very
little. The TEQ were compared to applicable screening values for dioxin/furan.
