Get <br />medical attention immediately. <br />Frostbite Reddish area on <br />skin, frozen skin. <br />Numbness or <br />lack of feeling on <br />exposed skin. <br />Place affected extremity in warm, not <br />hot, water or wrap in warm towels. <br />Get medical attention. <br /> <br />5.5.8 Heat Stress <br />Heat stress and associated complications can be the most prevalent health hazard at many sites, <br />especially when PPE is used. Workers in PPE may experience varying degrees of heat stress if <br />precautions are not taken. It is important to remember that individuals react to heat in different ways. <br />Workers should be aware of signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses, as well as first aid for these <br />conditions. These signs and symptoms are summarized in the table. <br />Condition Signs Symptoms Response <br />Heat Rash or <br />Prickly Heat <br />Red rash on skin Intense itching and <br />inflammation <br />Increase fluid intake and observe <br />affected worker. <br />Heat Cramps Heavy sweating, <br />lack of muscle <br />coordination <br />Muscle spasms, and <br />pain in hands, feet, <br />or abdomen <br />Increase fluid uptake and rest <br />periods. Closely observe affected <br />worker for more serious <br />symptoms. <br />Heat <br />Exhaustion <br />Heavy sweating; <br />pale, cool, moist <br />skin; lack of <br />coordination, <br />fainting <br />Weakness, <br />headache, dizziness, <br />nausea <br />Remove worker to a cool, shady <br />area. Administer fluids and allow <br />worker to rest in cool area until <br />fully recovered. Increase rest <br />periods and closely observe <br />worker for additional signs of <br />heat exhaustion. If symptoms of <br />heat exhaustion recur, treat as <br />above and release worker from <br />the day’s activities after he/she <br />has fully recovered. <br />Heat Stroke Red, hot, dry skin; <br />disorientation; <br />unconsciousness <br />Sweating stops; <br />nausea, dizziness <br />and confusion; <br />strong, rapid pulse <br />Immediately contact emergency <br />medical services by dialing 911. <br />Only certified first aid personnel <br />should administer care.
