At <br />locations where the use of a hand trowel is practical, samples will be collected into wide-mouth, <br />½ liter plastic or glass containers or plastic bags. Samples collected from greater than one foot <br />beneath the surface of the waste will be collected in a stainless steel tube sampler which will be <br />driven into the underlying waste material using a hand driven slide sampler. Samples will be <br />collected into 6-inch long by 2-inch diameter stainless steel tubes installed within the tube <br />sampler. As the samples are retrieved, the ends of the tubes will be covered with Teflon sheets <br />and secured with plastic caps. Sample containers will be filled to the top, taking care to prevent <br />material from remaining in the lid threads prior to being closed to prevent potential <br />contamination. Both the tubes and/or the sample containers will be properly labeled, placed <br />inside a sealable plastic bag, and stored in an ice chest and cooled to 4oC. <br />At the completion of sampling activities, samples will be delivered to a state-certified hazardous <br />waste laboratory for analyses using standard chain-of-custody protocols. <br />1.3 Decontamination Procedures <br />All equipment that comes into contact with burn ash and/or suspected hazardous materials will <br />be decontaminated in a pre-designated area. Disposable equipment intended for one- time use <br />will not be decontaminated, but will be packaged for appropriate disposal. Decontamination will <br />occur prior to and after each use of a piece of equipment. <br />The following decontamination procedures will be followed: <br />◼ Non-phosphate detergent and tap-water (bottled water) wash, using a <br />brush if necessary <br />◼ Tap-water rinse DRAFT
