PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202
209/468-3420

February 4, 2000
To: Vera Macias, Venetian Park Apartments
From: Jeff Carruesco, Sr. REHS, San Joaquin County Environmental Heath
Subject: Pool #2 deck and plumbing repair, 1540 Mosaic Way
This Department has recently discovered that repair work is being performed on pool #2
at Venetian Park Apartments, 1540 Mosaic Way. According to Vera Macias, property
manager, they contracted with Custom Pool Plastering, Inc to replace the decking around
the pool and resurface the pool bottom, among other more minor items. Due to the lack
of a handrail in the shallow end of the pool I informed Vera that a handrail must be
installed, per California Health and Safety Code. I also informed her that the main drain
cover musr be anti-vortex and the equalizer line covers must either be anti-vortex or anti-
hair entrapment.
In addition to the above-mentioned work, it is the recommendation of this Department to
also replace the pool filter and pump. A review of a past inspection showed that the
existing pump was only pumping 18 gallons per minute, where 40 gallons per minute is
required. Also, the pool filter and grids appeared old and corroded.
The pools at this facility are also experiencing a duck problem. Pursuant to California
Health and Safety Code, Section 116043:
Every public swimming pool, including swimming pool structure, appurtenances,
operation, source of water supply, amount and quality of water recirculated and in the
pool, method of water purification, lifesaving apparatus, measures to insure safety of
bathers, and measures to insure personal cleanliness of bathers shall be such that the
public swimming pool is at all times sanitary, healthful and safe.
According to Section 65533 (b), animals shall not be permitted in the pool or pool area.
This Department is recommending looking into this matter as soon as possible to assure a
healthy and sanitary swimming environment. A pool cover may be utilized under the
proper conditions set forth by this Department.
Jeff Carruesco, Sr. REHS, San Joaquin County
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
