Hazardous waste will be packaged in poly five‐gallon buckets
with screw‐top lids or 55‐gallon metal or poly drums. The containers must be in good
condition.
Hazardous waste cannot be packaged in any damaged or leaking containers. Containers
must be compatible with the hazardous waste, and corrosive hazardous wastes cannot be
packaged in a metal drum unless the drum has a plastic liner that will prevent the corrosive
hazardous waste from coming in contact with, and potentially reacting with, the metal. All
hazardous waste containers must be kept closed; the only time a hazardous waste
container can be open is when hazardous waste is being packaged into or removed from
the container. When closing the container, the lid must be secured in a manner such that if
the container were to be knocked over, the hazardous waste would not spill out of or be
released from the container.
All hazardous waste containers must be inspected weekly. During the weekly inspection,
you must look for leaking or deterioration of containers caused by corrosion or
other factors.Incompatible hazardous wastes cannot be packaged in the same
container. Never package flammable hazardous wastes with any corrosive hazardous
wastes. Corrosive acidic hazardous wastes cannot be packaged with corrosive alkaline
hazardous wastes.
45
