If
the heart rate exceeds this amount, shorten the next work cycle by one third and keep the rest period the
same. Suggested monitoring frequencies are shown in the following table.
AMBIENT TEMP('F) NOT WEARING PPE WEARING PPE
72.5-77.5 After each 150 minutes of work After each 120 minutes of work
77.5-82.5 After each 120 minutes of work After each 90 minutes of work
82.5-87.5 After each 90 minutes of work After each 60 minutes of work
87.5-90 After each 60 minutes of work After each 30 minutes of work
90 and above After each 45 minutes of work After each 15 minutes of work
Note: When wearing protective clothing in warm weather conditions, a personal cooling vest or
equivalent is recommended
To help prevent heat stress, Site personnel should drink a sufficient quantity of water to maintain body
fluids at normal levels. Daily fluid intake should approximately equal the amount of water lost in
perspiration. The normal thirst mechanism is not sensitive enough to provide for sufficient consumption
of water to replace lost fluids. The following is recommended when heavy perspiration occurs:
• Maintain drinking water temperature at 50OF to 60°F.
• Drink 16 ounces of fluid (preferably water or electrolyte replenishing fluid, such as Gatorade)
before beginning work.
• Drink a cup or more of water or equivalent fluid every 15 to 20 minutes, or at each monitoring
break. A total of 1 to 1.6 gallons of fluid per day is recommended, but more may be necessary
to maintain body weight.
3.5 Noise Hazards
The primary noise hazard at soil and groundwater investigation Sites is from excavation equipment, or
drilling equipment, if used. Noise hazard surveys indicate that excavators and drilling rigs may produce
continuous and impact noise at or above the OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit(PEL). Personnel within 25
feet of operating equipment must wear hearing protective devices (either muffs or plugs).
Aircraft and equipment related to airport activities will be present at this Site. Wear hearing protection
whenever appropriate.
