ITO E RO E K SOP No.004,REv.2
AssoclATEs,INC SOIL SAMPLING
PAGE 13
sampler is withdrawn. EnCoreTM samplers or VOA plungers should be filled with soil taken
directly from the tube sampler. Before use, and during storage and transport, the tube
sampler should be capped with a nonreactive material. For physical sampling parameters,
the tube is sealed using plastic caps. The top and bottom of the tube sampler should be
labeled and the tube sampler should be stored accordingly
2.4.3 Direct-Push Technology Sampler
Geoprobe systems utilize DPT. In many cases, DPT is less expensive and faster than collecting
soil samples with a standard drilling rig. In addition, the use of DPT causes minimal
disturbance to the ground surface and generates little to no soil cuttings. DPT uses acetate
or clear polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sleeves for collecting soil samples.
Upon retrieval of the sampling rod from the ground, the sample sleeve is extruded from the
sampling rod. The sleeve is sliced lengthwise twice, to open the sleeve. Soil samples can be
collected directly from the opened sleeve. If VOA samples are to be collected, EnCoreTM
samplers or VOA plungers should be filled with soil taken directly from the opened DPT
sampler. Samples for other specific chemical analyses should be taken after the VOA sample
has been collected. The remainder of the recovered soil can then be used for visual
classification of the sample and containerized for physical analysis. The entire sample is
retained for analysis or disposal.
2.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL CHECK
Before leaving each sampling site, take time to complete a quality control (QC) check of the
collected samples and documentation. An opportunity to correct any field sampling errors
may not be possible after leaving the site. The QC check should include the following:
• Inspection of all sample containers to determine that no required samples have
been forgotten and an adequate volume of each sample has been collected.
Note: Determining that all required QC samples have been collected is a part of this
inspection (e.g., ambient blanks, trip blanks, duplicates, matrix spike/matrix spike
duplicate (MS/MSD), rinsates, temperature blanks).
• Inspection of all coolers to determine that adequate ice is included and that a
temperature blank has been included in each cooler.
• Inspection of the field log book to determine that all data entries are accurate and
complete.
