Wiggle the thief a <br /> few times to allow the material being sampled to enter the open slots. Close the <br /> grain thief and withdraw it from the material. <br /> 6. Place the grain thief in a horizontal position with the slots facing upward. Rotate <br /> the outer tube and slide it away from the inner tube. <br /> 7. If composite sampling is required, repeat steps 4 through 6 at different points two <br /> or more times. Combine the samples in a stainless-steel bowl or similar container. <br /> 8. Transfer the sample into the labeled container using a stainless-steel or plastic <br /> spoon, spatula, or similar tool. <br /> 9. Ensure that a Teflon® liner is present in the cap of the sample container, if <br /> required. <br /> 10. Secure the cap tightly on the sample container. <br /> 11. Complete all chain-of-custody documents, field logbook entries, and packaging <br /> requirements. <br /> 12. Decontaminate all non-disposable sampling equipment after each use and <br /> between sampling locations using the procedures in SOP No. 002, General <br /> Equipment Decontamination. <br /> FIGURE 2. Even the best <br /> monitoring equipment cannot replace astute observation and common sense. Be alert and <br /> aware of surroundings and conditions at all times. <br />
