Environmental samples
typically contain low concentrations of contaminants and when handled require only
limited precautionary procedures
Hazardous Materials Regulations: The HMR are DOT regulations for the shipment of
hazardous materials by air, water, and land; they are located in 49 CFR 106 through
180.
Hazardous samples: Hazardous samples include dangerous goods and hazardous
substances. Hazardous samples shipped by air should be packaged and labeled in
accordance with procedures specified by the DGR; ground shipments should be
packaged and labeled in accordance with the HMR.
Hazardous substance: A hazardous substance is any material, including its mixtures and
solutions, that is listed in Appendix A of 49 CFR 172.101 and its quantity, in one
package, equals or exceeds the reportable quantity (RQ) listed in the appendix.
IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations: The DGR are regulations that govern the
international transport of dangerous goods by air.
