TO E RO E K SOP No.026,REV.1
ASSOCIATES,INC INDOOR AIR AND SUB-SLAB SOIL GAS SAMPLING METHODS
I PAGE 1
1.0 BACKGROUND
Indoor air and sub-slab soil gas samples can be collected using several methods. This
standard operating procedure (SOP) presents sample collection procedures for collecting
time-integrated, paired indoor air and sub-slab soil gas samples in stainless-steel SUMMA®
canisters. Procedures for collection with syringes, Tedlar® bags, and/or glass bulbs are not
included in this SOP. SUMMA®canisters are best suited for shipping samples to a full-service
laboratory.
Sub-slab sampling is conducted to determine the concentrations of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) in soil gas underlying a structure with slab flooring. The results of the
sub-slab sampling can be used to determine the potential for vapor intrusion into the
overlying structure. Indoor air sampling is used to assess the presence of vapor-forming
chemicals in indoor air and to determine if vapor intrusion is occurring. Time-integrated
samples are often required for highly variable environments such as in a residence or
occupational setting. This SOP outlines the methods used for the time-integrated, paired, or
concurrent sampling of indoor air and subsurface soil gases beneath slabs to provide
multiple lines of evidence and support findings about the relative contributions of vapor
intrusions and background sources to indoor air. It should be noted that additional outdoor
ambient samples may also be concurrently collected to address specific needs of the project.
There are standard (i.e., typically applicable) operating procedures which may be varied or
changed as required, dependent on the site conditions, equipment limitations imposed by
the procedure. In all instances, the procedures ultimately employed should be documented
and associated with the final report.
Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute United States
Environmental Protection Agency) U.S. EPA endorsement or recommendation for use.
1.1 PURPOSE
The purpose of this SOP is to provide guidance for the use of SUMMA® canisters for paired
indoor air and sub-slab soil gas sample collection.
