TO E RO E K SOP No.026,REV.1 <br /> ASSOCIATES,INC INDOOR AIR AND SUB-SLAB SOIL GAS SAMPLING METHODS <br /> I PAGE 3 <br /> 2.0 PROCEDURES <br /> Summary: Indoor air is sampled by placing a SUMMA® canister at a specific sample location <br /> and opening the canister valve. Sub-slab soil gas is sampled by drilling a hole into the slab <br /> and inserting Teflon® tubing which is attached to a SUMMA® canister for a specified period <br /> of time (as documented in the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) and/or Field Sampling <br /> Plan (FSP)). <br /> This section describes the pre-sampling inspection, selection of indoor air and soil gas <br /> sampling locations and general preparation of the sampling system to be used. This section <br /> also provides detailed procedures for collecting samples using SUMMA® canisters. Finally, <br /> this section discusses additional considerations that affect indoor air and soil gas sampling— <br /> including duplicate and equipment blank sample collection, decontamination, and sample <br /> transfer for the sampling method. <br /> 2.1 PRE-SAMPLING INSPECTION AND SAMPLING LOCATION SELECTIONS <br /> A background review, or pre-sampling inspection, must be conducted prior to conducting <br /> any indoor air or sub-slab soil gas sampling. The background review will include a visual <br /> inspection of each structure to: 1) determine the configuration of the basement, crawl space <br /> and/or slab-on-grade, including thickness of the slab; 2) determine if there are sumps or <br /> wells; 3) evaluate floor and wall conditions; 4) describe the heating and ventilation system; <br /> and 5) assess the potential use of contaminants of concern. <br /> Prior to initiating indoor air sampling activities, the sampling team should complete all <br /> reasonable efforts to identify and eliminate potential contaminate sources for: a) internal <br /> building sources (background source such as smoking, stored chemicals or other vapor <br /> producing activities); and b) ambient external building locations (e.g., industrial processes <br /> such as fueling, painting etc.,) that may compromise sample integrity. These pre-sampling <br /> activities should be documented in field logbooks. Sources should be removed as soon as <br /> practical, preferably 24 to 72 hours prior to sampling.Ambient air from outdoors should be <br /> minimized and windows and doors should remain closed as feasible throughout the <br /> sampling activities. Additionally, the sampling team should identify heating and ventilation <br /> systems design features and locate sample locations "upwind" of such features when <br />
