Foothill Sanitary Landfill – Seismic Characterization 4 03.18.2015
3.8 Northern San Andreas (SAO+SAN+SAP+SAS)
The four segments that comprise the Northern San Andreas Fault zone were selected for this
seismic characterization: SAO - Offshore, SAN - North Coast, SAP - Peninsula, and SAS - Santa
Cruz Mountains. The Northern San Andreas Fault is a strike-slip fault, characterized by a total
fault length of 472.0 km, a fault plane width of approximately 11.8 km, and an unreported slip
rate (USGS, 2008). The Northern San Andreas Fault zone is approximately 133.0 km from the
Landfill site with a reported maximum moment magnitude earthquake of 8.05 (USGS, 2008).
The maximum moment magnitude of 8.05 has been selected as the MCE for this fault zone.
A summary of the eight fault / fault zones and their corresponding source parameters are
presented in Table 1 below.
Table 1
Summary of Fault / Fault Zones and Corresponding Source Parameters
Fault / Fault Zone
Name
MCE
Moment
Magnitude
“Mw”
Slip
Type
Fault
Length
Fault
Width
“W”
Slip
Rate
Dip /
Direction
Closest Distance
from
Landfill Site
to Surface
Projection of
Coseismic
Rupture
“RJB” (=RX)
Closest
Distance
from Landfill
Site to
Coseismic
Rupture
“RRUP”
Depth to Top
of Coseismic
Rupture
“ZTOR”
Depth to
Bottom of
Coseismic
Rupture
“ZBOT”
Great Valley 7
(Central Valley Coast) 6.90 thrust 59.3 km 11.6 km 1.5 mm/yr 15º / W 59.33 km 59.74 km 7.0 km 10.0 km
Greenville 7.00 strike
slip 50 km 14.2 km 2.0 mm/yr 90º / V 74.36 km 74.36 km 0.8 km 15.0 km
Mount Diablo 6.70 thrust 25.0 km 12.9 km 2.0 mm/yr 38º / NE 84.55 km 76.0 km 8.0 km 16.0 km
Orgalita 7.10 strike
slip 70 km 11.0 km 1.0 mm/yr 90º / V 89.41 km 89.41 km 0.0 km 11.0 km
Green Valley 6.80 strike
slip 56 km 7.3 km 4.7 mm/yr 90º / V 93.43 km 93.50 km 3.7 km 11.0 km
Calveras
(CN+CC+CS) 7.03 strike
slip 123 km 4.8 km not avail. 90º / V 94.56 km 94.89 km 2.2 km 7.0 km
Hayward / Rodgers Creek
(RC+HN+HS) 7.33 strike
slip 150 km 8.8 km 9.0 mm/yr 90º / V 102.50 km 102.51 km 1.2 km 10.0 km
N.
