Soils containing a significant amount of <br /> organic material have a distinct odor of decaying vegetation. Always utilize appropriate <br /> breathing zone air monitoring equipment as specified in the site-specific HASP. <br /> Cementation: Describe the cementation of intact coarse-grained soils as follows: <br /> • weak—crumbles or breaks with handling or little finger pressure; <br /> • moderate—crumbles or breaks with considerable finger pressure; or <br /> • strong—will not crumble or break with finger pressure. <br /> Identification of Peat: A sample composed primarily of vegetable tissue in various stages <br /> of decomposition that has a fibrous to amorphous texture, usually a dark brown to black <br /> color,and an organic odor. When present the sample shall be designated as highly organic <br /> soil. <br /> 2.6 Major/Minor Constituents <br /> Grain-size Scales: Grain size classification should be based on an accepted classification <br /> system, such as the Unified System.The predominate grain size should be listed in the soil <br /> description in all capital letters, selected from the following: <br /> • boulder: 300 mm; <br /> • cobble: 75 - 300 mm; <br /> • coarse gravel: 19 - 75 mm; <br /> • fine gravel: 4.75 - 19 mm; <br /> • coarse sand: 2.0 -4.75 mm; <br /> • medium sand: 0.425 - 2.0 mm; <br /> • fine sand: 0.075 - 0.425 mm; <br />
