4. EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
4.1 Overview
Prior to use and after each sample is collected, all non-dedicated soil and groundwater,
sampling equipment will be washed in a phosphate-free solution and rinsed with
deionized water. All larger equipment such as drilling rods will be decontaminated using
a steam cleaner.
4.2 Equipment
• PPE and air monitoring equipment as required by HASP;
• 5-gallon buckets (three);
• Non-phosphate detergent(Alconox or Liquinox);
• Domestic water (approximately 6 gallons per day) and deionized water
(approximately 3 gallons per day);
• Bottle brush and scrub brush (at least 1 of each);
• Garbage bags;
• Paper towels;
• Steam cleaner with water collection trailer (provided by drilling subcontractor);
and
• United States Department of Transportation(DOT)-approved drums(provided by
drilling subcontractor).
4.3 Field Implementation
Equipment that contacts samples will be initially decontaminated and decontaminated
before each new boring and/or sample using a three-bucket wash-and-rinse procedure as
follows:
1. Approximately three gallons of water will be put into each of three 5-gallon
buckets. The final rinse bucket will contain deionized water. An appropriate
amount of non-phosphate detergent (e.g., "Liquinox" or "Alconox") will be put
into the first bucket to create a detergent solution.
13
