<br />of earthquake-induced permanent displacements is intimately linked to the ratio of
<br />ky /kmax , but it isalso influenced significantly bythe landfill’sdynamic response charac-
<br />teristics,kmax , and duration of the ground motion,D5-95 .
<br />The analytical results are consistent with observations from available case records.
<br />A simplified seismic analysis procedure that is based on these validated analytical re-
<br />sults is presented. Although “simplified”, the procedure is comprehensive in that it re-
<br />quires: (a)characterization ofthedesignbedrockmotionsintermsofintensity,frequen-
<br />cy content, and duration; (b) estimation of the seismic loading at the base and cover of
<br />the landfill; (c) evaluation of performance in terms of seismically induced displace-
<br />ments; and(d)theapplication ofappropriate engineering judgment. Itsuseisillustrated
<br />in the seismic evaluation ofa typical landfill. Seismically induced permanent displace-
<br />ment estimates for the cover and base liner form the basis of evaluating the likely seis-
<br />mic performance of the geosynthetics used in the waste containment systems.
