Ammonia Awareness <br /> Inhalation: Inhaling ammonia gas can cause breathing problems, wheezing or chest pain. cause <br /> nasopharyngeal and tracheal burns, bronchiolar and alveolar edema, and airway destruction <br /> resulting in respiratory distress or failure Asphyxiation may occur in poorly ventilated or enclosed <br /> areas. <br /> Skin exposure: Mild to moderate skin exposure to ammonia can result in swelling and stinging <br /> pain; severe exposure to the skin can cause inflammation, blistering, tissue death and penetrating <br /> burns. Additionally, a worker may experience a frostbite injury if exposed to liquefied ammonia <br /> gas. <br /> In general, the severity of symptoms depends on the degree of exposure. You can smell it at much <br /> lower concentrations than will hurt you. <br /> If you smell ammonia and/or the ammonia alarm sounds, stay away from the affected area.
