KLE/NFELOER (H e a l t h&
Safety
Procedure HSP-5-08 Version 10
HEAT STRESS Number: Number:
Published 5/4/2018 Revised N/A
Date: Date:
5-08.6.5 Control Measures
Heat-related illnesses increase in early summer before people have become
acclimated to the higher temperatures. The heat and humidity combine to cause
heat problems. These illnesses are most likely to occur when the temperature is
95-100 degrees, high humidity and little or no breeze.
Prevention of heat stress on a work site will help avert serious illness and loss of
work productivity. To avoid heat stress, management should take the following
steps:
• When temperatures at or above 95F, a site/task specific plan must be
incorporated into the site-specific Health and Safety Plan to control and manage
exposures (i.e. work start/end times; rotation practices; cool-down periods;
additional evaluation practices onsite).
• Adjust work schedules to work at cooler times of the day.
• Provide shelter, such as shaded or air conditioned areas.
• At or below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, ensure that employees have timely access
to shade upon request.
• For temperatures at or above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, one or more areas with
shade shall be provided at all times while employees are present.
• Provide or ensure that shade will accommodate at least 25% of employees on
shift at any one time.
• Maintain workers' body fluids by providing at the worksite, at no cost to the
employee, water or equivalent fluids in the quantity of one quart per hour.
• Encourage workers to drink small quantities of water frequently, at a rate of up
to 4 cups per hour in extremely hot conditions.
• Encourage workers to stay in good physical condition.
• Provide cooling devices to aid in heat exchange.
• Train workers to recognize and treat heat stress.
• Encourage workers to maintain well balanced diets and avoid caffeine and
alcohol.
• Establish work-rest regimens and take frequent breaks. A work/rest schedule
will be implemented for personnel required to wear impermeable chemical
protective clothing (e.g., Tyvek) as follows:
Copyright 2019 Kleinfelder, Inc.
