proceed so as to avoid losing augers at those locations.The augers remain in the ground to a depth of 13 feet pending resolution on how to proceed. The attached pdf file contains a copy of the well destruction permits, a figure highlighting which wells were approved for pressure grout, an excerpt of the work plan that recommended pressure grout for all %-inch sparge wells, copies of well logs of wells that have not yet been destroyed, including wells S-7, S-9, and S-11,which have augers in the ground at this time.A review of the well logs show that in most borings the driller reported cobbles and gravel at approximately 11 to 14 feet. It is very likely that a concrete apron of sorts formed around these sparge wells at that depth when the wells were constructed in 2002. Coupled with the difficulty in staying vertical over the borehole, this is causing difficulty overdrilling the sparge wells. Consequently, we are seeking a variance of your well destruction policy to complete the well destructions as follows: • S-13: Pressure grout (already approved per issued permit) • S-4, S-5, S-6, S-8, and S-10: Pressure grout because they are%-inch wells, are difficult to overdrill and stay vertical, and are at risk to get augers stuck or obstructed at 11-14 feet; • V-3: pressure grout due to its close proximity to the gas line, pending confirmation from PG&E; • S-11: Excavate down to a depth approximately 13 feet adjacent to the boring in an effort to confirm the nature of the initial obstruction encountered at that depth. We need to be prepared for the prospect of abandoning the augers in the hole below that depth (approximately 30 to 35 feet of augers grouted in place between -10/15 feet bgs to the bottom of the bore hole at—43 feet bgs) • S-7 and S-9: The bore holes are advanced to approximately 13 feet bgs, where the obstructions were encountered. However,the casings are not intact above that depth. Recommend grouting the bore holes at this depth.There is no guarantee that grout will fill the %-inch well casing below this depth but the risk of losing more augers is too great.
