-5- 2P2/386/61-1
of the present channel--which at that time had a levee only on the
south side . Subsequently, Bear Creek has been diverted to the channe;
on the south property line with levees constructed on the north side
C
of this channel and a diversion dam constructed on Pixley Slough .
Geologic Setting
a
The site is mapped (USGS MF 1401, 1982) as being underlain by
partly consolidated , locally cemented silt and sand sediments of the
Modesto formation of Pleistocene age--derived primarily from glacial
outwash. A portion of the east part of the site is mapped as Recent
Calaveras River alluvium. Peat or organic soil depsits on the
.r
Bishop Tract are in be less than 5-ft thick---generally
thinning from west to east. Surficial organic matter has likely been
t .` substantially oxidized by cultivation. Deposits of loose-soft mineral
+soils and more than 5-ft of peat are expected to be very limited in
ateral extent to occurrences in existing and historic channels.
At greater depth the area is underlain by progressively older
avers of sediment (USGS MF 1761, 1985) with crystalline basement
Wicks present at more than 1000m depth . The sediments generally dip
ery gently to the west with slight unconformities marking different
enerations of deposition.
k
AK"
amu,.
I
