APPENDIX B
Specific Emergency Procedures: EARTHQUAKE
• REMAIN CALM! Don't panic or run. If you are inside a building, stay there as hazards
from falling objects may be outdoors. Brace yourself in an inside corner or doorway
away from windows or get under a desk.
• Grab anything handy (coat, purse, newspaper, etc.) to shield your head and face from
falling debris and splintering glass. If none of the above is nearby, cover your head with
your hands and arms.
• Stay away from tall bookcases, high shelves, cabinets and other furniture or equipment
that may slide or topple.
• If outdoors, get into an open area away from trees and power lines. Stay clear from
buildings and walls.
• If operating a vehicle, stop and stay seated. If the vehicle is a forklift, park on level
ground and stop. Keep both legs within the lift and both hands on the steering wheel.
• After the earthquake:
• Remain at your workstation as aftershocks may follow. Evacuate to the assembly area
only if announced by the EAP Administrator.
• Avoid using the telephone thus allowing emergency services its use.
• Do not re-enter the building until you have been instructed by the EAP Administrator and
emergency authorities.
• The EAP Administrator may decide to shelter -in-place should roads/highways/freeways
need to be kept clear of traffics or if the threat of aftershocks is still frequent.
