Respirators will be inspected monthly by the employee's supervisor to <br />assure that it is kept clean and in satisfactory working condition. Respirator inspection will <br />include: <br />• Tightness of connections <br />• Condition of face plate <br />• Condition of head bands <br />• Condition of cartridges <br />• Condition of valves <br />• Rubber or elastomer for pliability <br />• Rubber or elastomer for deterioration <br />NOTE: <br />STRETCHING AND MANIPULATING RUBBER OR ELASTOMER PARTS WITH A <br />MASSAGING ACTION WILL KEEP THEM PLIABLE AND FLEXIBLE. THIS WILL <br />PREVENT THEM FROM TAKING AN IMPROPER SET DURING STORAGE. WORN <br />OUT PARTS MUST BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY. <br />RESPIRATOR PROGRAM EVALUATION <br />The Respiratory Program will be reviewed annually to ensure it's adequacy as well as for <br />compliance with Federal and State standards that may have changed in the previous year. <br />Following the review, if it is determined that the program is still in compliance, a letter of <br />certification will be placed in the Policy Statement File. In addition, the company will monitor <br />the effectiveness of the respirator program by: <br />• Frequent unscheduled observation of employee activities throughout all areas where <br />respirators are required. <br />• Observation of and discussion with new employees to confirm proper training has been <br />carried out. <br />• Periodic discussions with supervisor and employees during Safety meetings. <br />MEDICAL MON ITORING/SU RVAI LLANCE <br />It shall be the policy of Sierra Chemical Co. to evaluate each process and/or operation <br />within it's facilities and perform risk assessments, evaluations , and determinations for <br />employee respiratory protection. This assessment will include monitoring of the <br />processes for airborne contaminents and their levels. <br />When levels are found to exceed the action levels established or prescribed by OSHA, <br />the first approach to remedy the situation will be the utilization of engineering controls, <br />secondly will be administrative controls and lastly will be the requirement for respiratory <br />protection. <br />When respiratory protection is required, SCCo. will ensure that all affected employees <br />are trained and fit tested for the applicable respirator in accordance with this policy. <br />The affected employees shall also be informed of the levels of contaminents found. <br />2 December 2003 5 Sierra Chemical Co. <br />
