Respirator Fit Testing
and training will be performed by the Regulatory Compliance Group. The elements of the
training will cover, but not limited to:
• Choosing the type of respirator for the particular task
• Fit Testing
• Cleaning and maintenance of the respirator
• Proper cartridge selection for environment being used in.
• When to change out cartridges
• When to replace the entire respirator
Training of each employee must be documented. This documentation will confirm that the
employee is approved to enter the respirator program, that the employee understands
where respirator use is required and proper use and maintenance of the respirator
dispensed to them. The proof of training documentation will be placed in the Employee's
Personal Training File.
MAINTENANCE OF RESPIRATORS
Respirators should be cleaned after each use, dried completely, and placed in a plastic bag
and stored in the storage container. This should be done using an approved alcohol wipe.
At the end of each week, or more often, if needed, respirators should be completely
cleaned and disinfected using the following procedures:
• Remove the air -purifying elements (Cartridges) from the respirator. Air purifying
elements must never be wash or disinfected.
• Immerse the respirator in a warm (140-160 degree F) aqueous germicidal detergent.
The respirator face piece and parts may be scrubbed gently with a cloth or soft brush.
Make sure that all foreign matter is removed from all surfaces of the rubber exhalation
valve flap and plastic exhalation valve seats.
• After washing and disinfecting the respirator, rinse the same with clean, warm (140-160
degree F) water and then allow the respirator to dry thoroughly.
• Once the respirator is dry, attach the air -purifying elements.
• Perform a "Positive", "Negative" test to free the diaphragms.
• Store the respirator in the storage container.
Any malfunction of the respirator shall be reported to Regulatory Compliance. They will
either be repaired or replaced, as necessary. When storing the respirator, the face piece
and exhalation valve must be in the normal position so as to prevent the abnormal set of
elastomer parts during storage.
2 December 2003 4 Sierra Chemical Co.
