UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK (UST) SYSTEM GENERAL OVERVIEW
All gas stations use Underground Storage Tank (UST) systems to store and dispense their fuel on-site.
These systems must be equipped with various monitoring devices and safety systems to assist the
Station Owner in detecting any accidental releases (leaks) to the environment as well as help minimize
the impact should any leaks occur. In addition to the monitoring system, the UST systems are built using
equipment that is double-walled or that provides secondary containment. The basic reason for this is to
provide a back-up system in case of an accidental leak. This practice greatly reduces the chance of leaks
that can contaminate our ground water. The drawing below provides a generic view of the equipment
that makes up a UST System.
Under
Dispenser
Containment ` -`
(UDC)
, FiII Sump
Single- or Double-
Walled Underground "
Piping with Continuous
Statistical Leak '
Detection (CSLD)
Single- or Double-Walled
Underground Storage
Tank (UST) with CSLD Submersible Turbine
(STP) Pump Sump
3.
